Yeeeeeaaaaaaay!

So as I previously said, Privateer was nominated for the UFO Awards. I thought I'd show you the shiny confirmation that it is not all an elaborate scheme. ^^

Anyway, thank you very much to those who nominated, seconded, and would have voted for me (if there had been a competition). I'm extremely flattered and grateful, and you made me giddy. THAT'S RIGHT. GIDDY.

Everything you didn't know about Link

Of course, after spending a whole day at my uncle's place, talking with my cousins about videogames (there are two things that run in the family: childhood chubbiness that melts at 13 years of age, and a passion for videogames), I of course had to return and start a new game of Twilight Princess.

You can't exactly blame me.

Anyway, I've noticed that you can learn a lot about a person in looking at where they live. This also holds true for our favourite Hero of Time/Winds/just about anything else Link is a Hero of.

I mean, in Ocarina of Time, he had that little picture carving of a stick figure fighting some sort of monster at the base of his treehouse. In the Wind Waker, Grandma had pictographs of him and Aryll lying around their home.

In TP, the joy reaches its summum. Here are the few things I've noticed in inspecting Link's bachelor home:

1. He doesn't own a bed. Really.
2. He owns a writing desk, with pencils. And lots of books.
3. He eats corn on the cob.
4. He dries his laundry by letting it hang on a cord inside his house.
5. There are dishes in the sink.
6. There is a quite large mirror in the basement.
7. All the stuff he needs to tend to Epona, including a spare saddle, rests just by the door.
8. He has pictures of Epona on his walls, one of Fado, one of the children, of an Ordon goat, but none of Ilia or Colin.
9. He has the coolest skylights ever.

What can we conclude from all this?

1. Link really doesn't sleep after all. He's an insomniac.
2. Link is either an artist or a writer. Either way, he's won a Joy Pendant from me.
3. I hope he has floss too, somewhere in the chaos of his house.
4. Can't say I'd let my laundry hang outside either, what with the children playing nearby and all.
5. He could do the dishes, once he's applied a fresh coat of anti-rust paint to his sink.
6. Now we know he knows he looks good.
7. He could probably build a stable for the poor thing, and then keep it all over there.
8. This guy has an odd sense of priorities, which is somewhat alarming.
9. I want skylights like his. With the leaves and all. And hopefully Furry the Friendly Squirrel to go with it.

FG teaser

Odds are that with my current interest in Fighting Gravity, it will reach its end as OiH did. As a result, I've finally decided that I could begin unveiling the background of this story.


FG is set in a futuristic Hyrule, where technology has evolved. The Hylian Alliance, which had until then united the eight countries of Twilight, Calatia, Holodrum, Labrynna, Hyrule, Termina, Minish and Waker is falling apart, shattered by the Guardian Alliance, self-proclaimed Guardian of the Future. Civil war has taken the Hylian Alliance and divided what had until then been strong friendships.

The story mainly follows Captain Link Forester and his subordinates, mechanic ***** and navigator *****, of the weakened Hylian Alliance Air Force, as they struggle to bring peace to troubled times alongside a fugitive princess, a young aristocrat savant, a pickpocket, and some other colourful characters.

Notably, FG will be the first story (of mine) in which so many of Link's various incarnations appear as seperate characters.


One might argue that this background sounds a lot like a Final Fantasy game. I won't deny it: it's true the idea for a lot of the technology was inspired by that franchise, though I assure you it will not be a crossover, or even a retelling of a FF game with LoZ characters. This story is a standalone sci-fi fantasy story, with inspirations from all kinds of sci-fi/fantasy sources. This includes Final Fantasy and Star Wars, among others.

For those who are concerned, because most LoZ sci-fi stories don't turn out that well in the fandom... well, it's a risk I'm taking. I think it's pretty damn good so far (I'm writing chapter 4 at the moment), and it should have enough material to last a while.

Yes, perhaps a second OiH would be safer and would have a better chance of succeeding, but I don't want this to be compared to OiH. I can't keep writing stuff that will constantly evolve in the massive shadow of Only in Hyrule. This needs to be different, and it will.

I hope when the time comes you take that little risk and read it. Who knows? You might actually enjoy it. ;P

Nominated??

Someone mailed me about this. Apparently, someone deemed that my story Privateer was worth nominating in a fanfic contest. Not that, in the LoZ category, there is fierce competition.

As I am the only nominee. *cracks up*

Still, it's flattering, I suppose. Wish more people were up there in the same category so I knew who I'm measuring up against, perhaps, but still.

Okay, who am I kidding? I got nominated nominated nominated! I am feeling absurdly gleeful, considering that of all the stories they could have nominated for that category, they chose one of my old AUs.

Someone really needs to nominate more stories, though. Winning by default is okay, but winning against a fierce adversary does have a certain sweetness to it. Eeheehee.
